Festivum Cichlids

Mesonauta festivus, commonly known as the Festive Cichlid or Flag Cichlid, is a peaceful, mid-water South American cichlid popular in the aquarium hobby, known for its distinctive dark lateral stripe and parental care. Native to the Amazon and Paraná river basins, it's a hardy, curious fish that thrives in planted tanks with other peaceful species, though it can grow large enough to eat smaller fish.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Silvery body with a prominent black stripe from mouth to dorsal fin, often with vertical bars and a spot on the caudal fin base.

  • Size: Can reach up to 6 inches (12 cm).

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and timid, making it a good community fish, but can become territorial during breeding.

  • Diet: Omnivorous; eats small invertebrates, and prepared frozen foods.

  • Habitat: Native to slow-moving waters in South America (Amazon, Paraná basins).

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Needs a large tank with plenty of plants and driftwood for hiding.

  • Tank Mates: Compatible with other peaceful cichlids like angels and severums, but avoid overly aggressive fish or very small species that can be eaten.

  • Water: Prefers temperatures between 72–82°F (22–28°C).

Behavior

  • Social: Often swims in loose groups and shows strong parental care.

  • Curiosity: Known to be inquisitive and will use its long pelvic fins to explore its environment.
