Geophagus Surinamensis

The Redstriped Eartheater (Geophagus surinamensis) is a South American cichlid fish known for its vibrant red and blue stripes and its habit of sifting for food, giving it its name “Eartheater.” Popular in aquariums, it's a peaceful to semi-aggressive fish and it can grow up to 10 inches long.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept with other peaceful South American cichlids or similar-sized fish.

  • Breeding: Mouthbrooders; females (and sometimes males) hold fry in their mouths for protection.
