Tiger Datnoid (Datnioides microlepis)

Fish

Datnioides microlepis, also known as the Indonesian tiger perch or finescale tigerfish, is a predatory freshwater fish native to Indonesia. It is characterized by its golden body with dark vertical stripes and is known for being a solitary and territorial fish as an adult. In the aquarium trade, it is often sold as an Indo Datnoid and requires a large tank with hiding spots and careful tankmate selection due to its predatory nature.

Description and characteristics

  • Appearance: Has a deep golden body with distinct, dark vertical stripes that resemble a tiger's pattern.

  • Size: Can grow to 12-15 inches in captivity, with some reaching up to 18 inches under optimal conditions.

  • Behavior: Adults are solitary and territorial, while juveniles tend to stay in groups. They are ambush predators that can be aggressive towards smaller fish.

  • Intelligence: Known for being intelligent and can recognize their owners.

Habitat and diet

  • Habitat: Found in slow-moving freshwater rivers, lakes, and floodplains, often near submerged vegetation or branches.

  • Diet: Adults are carnivores that feed on small fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates. Juveniles primarily consume zooplankton.

Aquarium care

  • Tank size: A large tank is necessary, with a minimum of 90 gallons recommended for adults.

  • Tank setup: Provide plenty of hiding spots like submerged rocks, driftwood, and plants to mimic their natural environment.

  • Water quality: Requires well-oxygenated water and regular water changes, as they are sensitive to poor water quality.

  • Tankmates: Choose tankmates carefully. They can eat smaller fish and may become stressed by aggressive or very active tankmates.
