Neon Tetra

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a popular, small, peaceful freshwater fish known for its vibrant blue and red stripe, making it ideal for community aquariums with other non-boisterous fish. They thrive in schools in well-planted tanks with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.5) and stable temperatures (75–82°F / 24–28°C).

Appearance and Behavior

  • Color: A bright, iridescent blue stripe runs horizontally across the body, with a red stripe below it, and an orange crescent above the eye.

  • Size: They grow to about 1 inch (25 mm) long.

  • Temperament: Peaceful and active schooling fish that feel secure in groups.

  • Gender: Females are often plumper with a slightly curved blue stripe, while males are slimmer with a straighter stripe.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: 5 gallons or more

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C).

    • pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic is best).

    • Water Quality: Requires very clean water; sensitive to fluctuations, so use slow, temperature-matched water changes.

  • Environment: A well-planted tank with driftwood mimics their natural habitat and helps them thrive.

  • Tank Mates: Should be kept with other peaceful fish that won't outcompete them for food.

Diet

  • Food: Small flake or pellet foods are necessary due to their small mouths, but frozen brine shrimp is best

Common Issues

  • Neon Tetra Disease (NTD): A highly contagious and currently incurable disease; prevention through quarantine and good care is crucial.

  • Sensitivity: Can be sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes, which can lead to stress, jumping out of the tank, or death
