Roseline Shark

Roseline Shark

The Denison barb (Sahyadria denisonii) is a colorful freshwater fish from India's Western Ghats, known as the Red Torpedo Barb or Roseline Shark in the aquarium trade. It's a peaceful, active schooling fish that needs a large tank with fast-flowing, pristine water, and is popular in aquariums. Captive breeding has made it more available, and it's crucial to buy captive-bred specimens.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Striking red, yellow, and black coloration, with a torpedo-shaped body.

  • Size: Can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm).

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful but very active; can nip at slow-moving tank mates like angelfish or bettas.

  • Diet: Omnivore, eating insects, worms, and plant matter; accepts most foods in an aquarium.

Aquarium Care

  • Tank Size: Minimum 50 gallons, but larger is better due to their active nature.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 72–77°F (22–25°C).

    • pH: 6.8–7.8.

    • Needs high oxygen and good filtration for fast-moving water.

  • Tank Mates: Best kept in schools of 5 or more; avoid slow, long-finned fish.

Not truly a shark but actually a very long barb! Unlike most other barbs, the Roseline Shark is a very peaceful fish that is a great addition to any larger community aquarium and are very easy to keep.
